When Harley joined Penrith Day Program in July 2025, he relied on a walker for mobility. Although Harley is non-verbal, he quickly showed his ability to understand verbal prompts and built strong connections with those around him.
By taking the time to build a strong, trusting relationship with Harley, his support workers, Andrew and Bruce, have played an instrumental role in his progress. Through consistent community access, ongoing encouragement, and person-centred support, Harley has made significant improvements in both his mobility and confidence, achieving milestones that once seemed out of reach... and the results have been nothing short of extraordinary.
Harley has progressed from walking with a forward-leaning posture with a walker, to walking independently with improved range of motion, greater stability, and a neutral spine! Initially hesitant to take even a few steps without his walker, Harley has grown so confident that he no longer considers using it. What was once an essential mobility aid has become optional.
For Harley's family, the transformation has been incredibly emotional. They shared that they had never seen Harley use one of his legs before, making this achievement even more remarkable.
Seeing Harley gain mobility has exceeded their expectations and will have a profound impact on his future, giving him greater freedom, independence, and a newfound confidence to participate more fully in everyday life!
Harley's journey is a powerful reminder that some of the greatest achievements don't happen overnight.
