For Micheal, getting out into the community can be daunting. In the past, he often felt more comfortable staying at home and was hesitant to go outside or use transport. Over time with the right support, patience, and plenty of encouragement, Micheal is becoming more confident in making his own choices and enjoying time out in the community!
Micheal now enjoys 1:1 Community Access twice a week, which provides opportunities to explore! Recently, Micheal headed out shopping with his favourite support staff and his very important companion, his best friend Bear.
During the outing, Micheal visited Best & Less, where Bear was in need of a brand-new outfit. Staff encouraged Micheal to browse the options and choose something special. When he spotted a few outfits in the baby section, Micheal was absolutely delighted and was excited to pick out Bear’s new look.
Micheal was so proud of Bear’s new outfit that he couldn’t wait to get back to Penrith Day Program and show all his friends.
Once back at the centre, Micheal happily walked around showing everyone Bear’s new outfit and sharing the story of their shopping adventure. It was a wonderful opportunity for Micheal to practise communicating and share something that was important to him.
What might seem like a simple trip was a big step for Micheal. With consistent support from familiar staff, he is building trust, confidence, and independence while discovering that getting out and about can be something to look forward to. And of course, Bear looked pretty fabulous too! 🧸 Well done, Michael, we are so proud of you!
